Our Story

Chicago’s Austin neighborhood is home to over 96,000 residents. It is by far the largest neighborhood in the entire city of Chicago, yet residents only have 3 options for grocery stores. This often leaves them with no other option but to travel to surrounding suburbs and neighborhoods just to get groceries for the week.

With this issue in mind, the non-profit organization Westside Health Authority, along with Forty Acres Fresh Market, came together to purchase the retail space at 5713 W. Chicago Ave to host the Soul City Community Market. Our market offers produce from local vendors selling fresh fruits, vegetables, prepared foods, and more!

While tackling the lack of healthy food in the area is their main focus, they also aim to bring smiles and a positive experience to the community. They offer a free photo booth, live music, and free merchandise including t-shirts for the residents that support the local vendors.

The weekend market takes place in the future location of Forty Acres Fresh Market, a black woman-owned mobile produce vendor that currently vends at the pop-up market as well. The city is backing the development of their supermarket along Austin’s Soul City Corridor with a $2.5 million grant, funded under the Chicago Recovery Plan. The market plans to run for the next two months before beginning construction on the permanent grocery store that will take its place.

The Soul City Community Market is located at 5713 West Chicago Avenue, and open every weekend on Saturdays 9am to 3pm, and Sundays 10am to 3pm .
